Top 5 Netflix Must-Watch Series Right Now

Brace yourselves, winter is coming. And we’re not talking about Game of Thrones.

This year, Mother Nature is not holding anything back this season. Cape Town is having its fair share of rain and snow. When the weather is this miserable, all you want to do when you get home is take off your shoes, put on your favourite pants and binge on some great series.

So, whether you’re into series as dark as the rainy six o’clock morning work commute or a person that prefers to seek the silver lining in the cloud, we’ve got our list of top five must-watch series that you can watch right now for any mood.

Black Mirror

The British series is back with only three episodes in its fifth season. Black Mirror is for those who love twisted plot twists or conspiracy theories of how technology will take over the world one day. Every episode is a different story with a different cast in a different setting, but they’re all about the collision of humanity’s most extreme technological innovations and darkest instincts. Basically, it predicts all the scary ways people could live in future.

Dead to Me

Another binge-worthy series is this American dark comedy where a widow is looking for the person that killed her husband in a hit-and-run. She then becomes friends with a free-spirited woman with a dark secret. And of course, they meet in a grief support group, conveniently. You’ll see what we mean. It has murder, mystery, humour and family drama. The episodes are long enough to enjoy but short enough not to become too grieved with the main character.

Lucifer

Not for the highly conservative church-goer, unless you have a good sense of humour. It starts with the Prince of Darkness abandoning his kingdom and moving to Los Angeles, the city of angels, to better understand humanity. He opens a nightclub in the city and forms a connection with a homicide detective, and together they solve cases. Four seasons later, it’s one of the most watched series on Netflix and fans are hoping for a fifth season after being left with a cliff-hanger. Have a look, even if it’s just for that scene where one of the characters speak Afrikaans as the devil’s language!

Good Girls

Snuggle up to this American crime comedy-drama on days when you just need to chill and forget about everything. The struggle is real for three Michigan moms who are having a hard time trying to make ends meet. Things are not working out for them, and they decide to pull off a heist at a supermarket. If only they knew that they’re in for more than they bargained for. Now in the second season, they find themselves in desperate circumstances and risk everything to take their power back.

Shadow

Local is lekker with this series. Shadow is Netflix’s first South African series and was shot in fifty locations around Jo’burg. This drama follows a former task force specialist taking on the crime world after the brutal and unjust murder of a young girl. People being let down by the criminal justice system see him as a “fixer”. The character takes full advantage of a rare condition called congenital analgesia that affects his central nervous system. For those that don’t speak medicine, it means he can’t feel physical pain.
