Why Drinking Rum & Whisky Can Save Your Life

Research has shown that a shot of whisky or rum a day could actually be good for your health.

Before we get to the interesting stuff though, please read our disclaimer. Don’t skip this part like the passengers that ignore flight attendants’ pre-flight safety demonstrations. Be lekker.

Deeliver promotes responsible drinking. Alcoholism and binge drinking is detrimental to your health and will undo any good thing that moderate amounts have. This post does not constitute medical advice and liquor should not replace any prescribed and chronic medication. Alcohol is not or sale to persons under the age of 18. And please, don’t drink and drive.

Moderate drinking, in this case, is defined as up to two drinks a day for men and up to one a day for women. Sorry ladies, it’s only because men’s bodies break down alcohol faster than yours.

Okay, now that we got that out of the way, here’s a list of health benefits of consuming (moderate) amounts of whisky and rum and why it could save your life when consumed responsibly.

Less Stress

We’re not talking about gaining confidence to talk to that hot chick at the bar. This is for people who just need to chill! A single serving of whisky or rum settles the nerves and calms the brain, which in turn reduces anxiety. No wonder so many business owners keep decanters in their offices.

Matters of the Heart

When you drink moderately, you are up to 50% less likely to experience a heart attack or stroke than teetotalers (people abstinent from alcoholic beverages – they must be totally into tea). Strong liquor acts as blood thinners and boosts the amount of HDL (good cholesterol), which prevents the build-up of LDL (bad cholesterol – the one that clogs arteries). But don’t cancel your gym membership yet. Exercise will still benefit you in other ways.

Stronger Immune System

Apparently, there are more antioxidants and trace levels of vitamins found in whisky and rum than in orange juice that can stimulate the immune system. Therefore, a shot will help to combat the common cold and other infections. We don’t recommend switching your morning juice with an Irish coffee before work, but adding a shot to a warm drink when you’re at home feeling under the weather will certainly help.

Memory Boost

Whisky and rum can boost your cognitive performance and reduce your chances of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Those same antioxidants help the brain to retain information and reduce the build-up of plaque and free radicals that are associated with interrupting neural pathways. Why not try a glass while filling in crossword puzzles?

Long Happy Life

You know those antioxidants that we keep talking about? They increase your lifespan too by two to five years. Okay, so hard liquor is no fountain of youth, but it will fight the effects of ageing compared to people who don’t drink (or those who overdo it).

Low Calories

Whisky and rum are low in saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and carbs. They also suppress your appetite, aiding in weight loss. But once you add mixers to it, you’re adding to that beer belly.

If you do feel like a mixed drink, try to stick to the diet or Zero cold drinks that contain less sugar.

Feel free to browse the Deeliver app for a wide range of cold drinks, whiskies and rum, and let’s have a toast to our good health.

It seems like a shot a day may very well keep the doctor away.
