Description
Boschendal 1685 Merlot 750ml.
A premium-tier Franschhoek Merlot from a historic estate.
Boschendal is one of South Africa's most recognised wine brands, with origins on the historic Boschendal estate in Franschhoek dating back to 1685 — the year that gives this premium-tier Merlot its name. The 1685 range is the brand's flagship-leaning tier, sitting above the everyday Boschendal range and built around longer cellar work.
The 1685 Merlot is barrel-aged in French oak to build structure and depth, drawing on selected Franschhoek fruit. The oak treatment supports — not overwhelms — Merlot's natural plummy, soft-tannin character, making for a polished, food-friendly Merlot with proper estate pedigree.
Tasting Note: Deep ruby in the glass. The nose layers ripe plum, dark cherry, mulberry, soft chocolate, dried herbs, gentle cedar and a whisper of warming spice. The palate is medium-to-full bodied, with juicy dark berry fruit, fine supple tannins, gentle herbal lift and a long, structured, lightly oaked finish.
ABV: typically 14%.
Region: Franschhoek, South Africa.
Food Pairing: A serious food red — sirloin steak, lamb shank, slow-cooked oxtail, smoked beef brisket, sticky pork ribs, or aged hard cheeses.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at cool room temperature (16–18°C) in a generous red-wine glass. Decants well — give it 30 minutes to open up.
Whether you're a Merlot drinker, building a Cape cellar, or hunting a special-occasion red with proper history, Boschendal 1685 Merlot 750ml delivers premium-tier Franschhoek character.
